Chinese food for Rowers

With sport to turning its attention on the Olympics, opening in less than one month, the BBC has created a series of Chinese food made easy, tempting us to make our own takeaway food. In this weeks episode Ching, the presenter, cooks two dishes for the GB women’s squad while they are training at Caversham, and then shows Katherine Grainger how to make Sweet and sour pork. Ching notes that in an average serving of sweet and sour pork takeaway there is 240g of fat, 36g salt and 176g sugar. That amount of fat is the same amount found in 30 hamburgers! Bring on the home cooked food!

The episode can be watched in full on BBC iPlayer for this week, and the recipes can probably be watched after that on the Chinese food made easy mini-site.

Thanks to Rachel Quarrel’s heads up about this.

More misuse of rowing

At Henley, as with all big social events, there are many free things being handed out. This year one of the most persistent group of “leafleters” were from Vaseline for men. There is one problem with their advertising, they used a photo of James Cracknell, and there are issues with the photograph
Cracknell Vaseline

- It doesn’t really look like Cracknell.

- He’s rowing, not sculling yet his competition in the background if sculling. (This could be excusable if one says he is training!)

- He is also losing to his competition!

- His arms are bent suggesting he is near the finish of the stroke, whilst his legs are also bent suggesting he is near the catch, so basically he’s rowing really, well, wrong.

You would have thought that Vaseline would have done at least a little bit of research, and realised that they would be handing this out to the men at Henley, the majority of whom would know at least a little about rowing, which is enough to know that this picture makes Cracknell look worse than a beginner!

When will they learn?

Adverts with rowing

On my way to Henley for a week of spectacular rowing I came across this advert. Here are four guys from Imperial College Boat Club, or at least wearing their kit, holding a sofa like a boat. What they were thinking doing that I don’t know, but I suppose if there’s cash involved…

Come on Tideway Slug I know you can name and shame!

Clocks

I have designed and created created two clocks, and as I received a large number of people saying they would like one I have decided to showcase them here. If you would like one please email or phone me, or if you don’t have my details use this form to contact me.

Further to these designs I have also created a few of other designs as shown here:

It must be said that all logos are copyright their respective owners, and as such they are not official merchandise of the organisations.

More Robots

ASIMO
My dad mentioned this to me, and I thought it had to be shared. ASIMO, Honda’s robot has a new hobby, conducting orchestras! and he, sorry it has such skill and grace at it, it’s simply astonishing.

(Video at YouTube)

Here is the video the BBC published of the interview at the challenge event when Newcastle challenged Durham to a race. Clearly Newcastle want to try and win this event, but Durham will obviously not allow them their first win! Durham has never lost this event, and this year should be no exception.

Last weekend’s events produced some outstanding results for the Uni Boat club, and compared to Durham’s 2300 odd points, Newcastle’s 700 or so points pale into insignificance.

Iron Man

I got asked if I wanted to go see Iron Man with JP a few days ago, I had no idea what it was about (I’ve not really been keeping my heads up about films out at the moment)… I thought it might have been about Ted Hughes’ Iron Man. Instead we have yet another comic book film. While watching the film, which has a great story line-ish, all I could do was marvel at the awesome engineering of the exoskeleton of Tony Stark’s creation. Ok obviously there’s a fair amount of CGI involved, but in case you didn’t know it’s not actually that far away, the mechanics of it at least, the power generation thing in his chest, I don’t know about that, nor the flying. The video below is what I’m talking about. Just really cool stuff.:

On another note, related in as much as it is to do with amazing strength, DU owned BUSA regatta this weekend in Strathclyde, winning pretty much everything, JA won 2 golds and a silver, way more than I’ve ever done, particularly in just one weekend! This is a seriously good year for the boat club.

Flying Penguins

From the front page of the BBC website, “remarkable footage of penguins flying as part of its new natural history series, Miracles of Evolution“. Camera crews discovered a colony of Ad

More Rowing on TV

I just thought I’d throw this out there: I was flicking through the channels when I passed over Working Lunch on the BBC and there was an article on rowing manufacture. I decided to watch the article and was amused to see a Mr Ritchie in the boat behind the presenter, along with other members of Molsey BC. The presenter, who was wearing a buoyancy aid, was joining in the rowing whilst talking about how Janousek have “bucked the trend” of some boat builders having to close down (Eton Racing Boats and Cambridge Racing Shells).

He states that the number of rowers in the UK have “increased by over 50% in the last 9 years” and there are now over 600 clubs throughout the UK and the boat building industry is worth
